Drawing 2: Parallel Project – early idea sketches

Currently at Project 2 of Part 2 in the course I have begun to think about the Parallel Project. The following pages outline some of my early thinking. I have been inspired by charcoal drawing and making marks by removing with putty rubber and building up tone, space, depth and volume (Project 1 of Part 2). My sketches are all based on statues that attracted my attention for one reason or another over the years and I am thinking about exploring how material, ground, context and technique can be brought together in drawings representing what I feel or think about these images.

Having just competed Part 2 of the course, I have had some other thoughts about the Parallel Project. In looking at the work of Cornelia Parker for the contextual focus point, my eyes and mind were opened to the idea of why she chooses to break-up and destroy stuff before re-imagining it into something new. This led me to look into the idea of deconstruction as an approach to making art:

“The term ‘to deconstruct’ conjures an image of a structure or object in mid-air, suspended, all its parts visible. ‘Deconstruction’ can also conjure an image of something in the midst of collapse, not destroyed, but falling apart – a ruin, even. ‘To deconstruct’ something suggests that the act of taking something apart can be the first step toward understanding something anew.” In: Richards, K. M. (2008) Derrida reframed – interpreting key thinkers for the arts. New York: I.B.Tauris & Co Ltd., p.12.

This intrigues me and I would like to explore it further. I have also thought that there might be merit in considering the Parallel Project alongside the Critical Review. To this end, some formative ideas for both PP and CR – making and analysing – might be exploring one element (or more) of the following:

Deconstruction; Layering; Drawing by removing; What’s left unsaid; Found objects.

To try and frame this more visually, I created this word cloud – words associated with ‘Deconstruct’ – synonyms, antonyms and associated words”:
